Job summary

Stanford Health Care is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to accession and process specimens under the supervision of the Pre-Analytical Supervisor. Responsibilities include data entry, sample routing, answering inquiries, and assisting with media/reagent preparation.

The role requires adherence to lab procedures and patient-sample handling standards. Qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED and strong English communication, with no prior experience required.

Qualifications

• Ability to establish good working relationships with a variety of professional, technical and nontechnical staff
• Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities
• Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the job
• Knowledge of aseptic technique and other lab techniques (micro/viro)
• Knowledge of basic laboratory testing procedures, laboratory precautions, and use and care of common laboratory equipment
• Knowledge of instruments, methods and materials used in a hospital laboratory
• Knowledge of medical terminology
• Knowledge of various nontechnical needs of a laboratory, usually acquired from a combination of previous work experience and/or schooling
• Skills: Data entry

Responsibilities

• Accession patient information accurately into Laboratory computer system and verify requests
• Distribute processed samples to appropriate areas in the laboratory and handle STAT requests promptly
• Answer telephones and provide status updates on testing and results
• Assist with media, reagent, and glassware preparations and communicate with physicians and staff
• Maintain compliance with attendance, punctuality and health and safety policies
• Resolve routine problems independently and escalate to supervision when needed
• Keep work areas clean and stocked with necessary supplies and dispose of waste properly
• Keep logs and records accurate and up to date
• Print and fax reports and route reports as requested
• Provide orientation and training to Lab Assistants and new employees
