Job summary

GitHub is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Compute Platform to design and operate Kubernetes-based platform systems across production services. You will drive reliability, scalability, and safety in a distributed environment.

You will mentor engineers, own cross-team initiatives, and contribute to the platform's operational excellence in a remote-first setting, with strong emphasis on asynchronous collaboration and Azure Kubernetes Service experience.

Qualifications

• 9+ years experience in Software Engineering or related field with production software delivery in multiple languages (C/C++/Java/Go/Python).
• Experience with large-scale Kubernetes fleet operations and platform engineering is a strong plus.
• Willingness to work in a remote-first environment and communicate asynchronously.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate Kubernetes-based platform systems for GitHub production services.
• Improve reliability, scalability, and operability across the Kubernetes fleet.
• Lead cross-team platform initiatives including AKS migrations and capacity management.
• Define safe migration paths and operational standards with service owners and infrastructure teams.
• Mentor engineers, participate in design/code reviews, and drive incident prevention.
