Job summary

PayJunction is seeking a Software Architect to design and build enterprise features and payment integrations for high-volume processing. You will take open-ended problems from a blank page to production while continuing to write Java in every sprint.

You will shape reliability, PCI scope, and performance across our processor integrations, leveraging AI-assisted development. The role requires deep experience in Java, AWS, Linux, MySQL, and modern observability tooling.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering with ownership of production systems.
• ~5+ years of Java, including web frameworks and JVM ecosystem, with recent production Java work.
• Production experience with AWS, Linux (Ubuntu/Debian), relational databases (MySQL preferred), CI/CD (Jenkins or comparable), infrastructure as code (Puppet or similar), and observability tooling (Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus, or comparable).
• Experience designing and operating high-availability transactional systems where downtime or data loss has financial or customer impact.
• Experience using AI coding assistants or agents (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor, or comparable) in day-to-day production work.
• BS in Computer Science or equivalent applied experience.

Responsibilities

• Personally design the highest-risk systems end-to-end with clear design docs, requirements, trade-offs and failure modes.
• Write production Java every sprint and review PRs promptly.
• Maintain core platform reliability and PCI scope by design.
• Ensure processor integrations are efficient, from message mapping to settlement reconciliation.
• Raise delivery velocity with AI-assisted development and set security guardrails for AI-generated code.
