Job summary

Family Dollar in Chesapeake, VA is seeking an Inventory Accountant to ensure the financial accuracy and integrity of inventory accounting processes across the organization. You will partner with Finance, Merchandising, Store Operations, Distribution Centers, and IT to analyze inventory performance, resolve discrepancies, and support strategic decisions, including audits and budgeting.

This role requires a BS in Accounting or Finance, at least four years of accounting experience, and proficiency

Qualifications

• BS in Accounting, Finance or related area.
• Minimum of 4 years general accounting experience (public or private).
• Proficient with Microsoft Excel.
• General knowledge of inventory transactions and how they flow through financial systems.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• SQL writing experience.
• Experience with Power BI, Tableau, or Alteryx Designer.

Responsibilities

• Analyze monthly MD and shrink activity to identify trends and proper accounting.
• Research and determine inventory accounting entries for RSL, Retek, and GL, resolving discrepancies with cross-functional teams.
• Perform monthly GL account reconciliations and investigate variances with IT support.
• Prepare and compile monthly inventory-related financial reporting package.
• Lead markdown review meetings with key business partners and provide insights.
• Maintain and update internal controls documentation over inventory.
• Serve as primary inventory contact for auditors during reviews and audits, including work papers.
• Prepare recurring and ad hoc inventory-related journal entries.
• Assist IT initiatives related to inventory with proper accounting considerations.
• Create SQL queries to investigate root causes of inventory issues and propose fixes.
• Review and support the Physical Inventory process and resolve issues.
• Prepare and own budget/forecast for shrink, markdowns, DC costs, inventory service.
