Job summary

Family Dollar is seeking an Inventory Accountant to ensure financial accuracy and oversight of inventory accounting processes. The role partners with Finance, Merchandising, Store Ops, DCs, and IT to analyze performance, resolve discrepancies, and support strategic decisions.

You will manage monthly reconciliations, journal entries, budget/forecast for shrink and other inventory accounts, and serve as the main contact for internal and external audits, with a focus on internal controls and

Qualifications

  • BS in Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • 4+ years of general accounting experience (public or private).
  • Strong Excel and data analysis skills.
  • Experience with inventory transactions and financial systems.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-starter with ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • SQL writing experience.
  • Power BI, Tableau or Alteryx experience.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze monthly MD and shrink activity to identify trends and issues.
  • Research and determine inventory accounting entries for RSL, Retek, and GL; resolve discrepancies.
  • Perform monthly GL reconciliations, investigate variances, and coordinate IT fixes.
  • Prepare and compile monthly inventory-related financial reporting.
  • Lead markdown review meetings and provide insights and recommendations.
  • Maintain internal controls documentation for inventory.
  • Serve as primary inventory contact for auditors during reviews.
  • Prepare recurring and ad hoc inventory journal entries.
  • Assist IT initiatives related to inventory with proper accounting considerations.
  • Partner with merchandising, store, and DC teams to analyze inventory issues using SQL.
  • Review and support the Physical Inventory process and related issues.
  • Prepare and own budget/forecast for shrink, markdowns, DC costs, and inventory services.

Job description

This role is responsible for ensuring the financial accuracy, integrity, and oversight of the company’s inventory accounting processes. The position serves as a key partner across Finance, Merchandising, Store Operations, Distribution Centers, and IT to analyze inventory performance, identify trends and risks, resolve discrepancies, and support strategic business decisions. The individual oversees inventory-related reporting, reconciliations, forecasting, and accounting activities while maintaining strong internal controls and compliance with accounting standards. Additionally, this role drives continuous process improvements through data analysis, system enhancements, and cross-functional collaboration, serving as a primary resource for inventory-related audits, operational issue resolution, and financial planning initiatives. Through a combination of analytical insight and business partnership, the role helps ensure accurate inventory valuation, effective loss management, and informed decision-making across the organization.

  • Analyze monthly MD and shrink activity to identify trends and/or issues and proper accounting
  • Responsible for research and determination of appropriate inventory accounting entries as necessary for the Retail Stock Ledger (RSL), Retek, and General Ledger (GL), collaborate with cross-functional teams and field operations to resolve discrepancies.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations of GL accounts, investigate variances, and work with IT to resolve underlying system or data issues.
  • Prepare and compile monthly inventory related financial reporting package.
  • Lead recurring markdown review meetings with key business partners and provide insights and recommendations.
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating internal controls documentation over the company’s inventory
  • Serve as the primary inventory contact for internal and external auditors during quarterly reviews and annual audits, including preparing required audit work papers.
  • Prepare all required recurring and ad hoc inventory-related journal entries.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of IT initiatives related to inventory, ensuring accounting considerations are properly addressed.
  • For inventory issues, partner with merchandising, store, and DC teams to identify and analyze. This includes creating SQL queries to investigate root causes and propose corrective actions.
  • Review and support the Physical Inventory process and resolve related issues as needed.
  • Prepare and own the budget/forecast process for shrink, markdowns, capital DC cost, inventory service, and other relevant accounts
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications
  • BS in Accounting, Finance or other related area
  • Minimum of 4 years general accounting experience (public or private) or similar
  • Microsoft Excel experience
  • General knowledge of inventory transactions and how they flow through financial systems
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written
  • Good analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Self starter with ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision
  • SQL Writing Experience
  • Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, or Alteryx Designer Experience
Desired Qualifications
  • Basic understanding of the retail method of inventory accounting
  • Retail Inventory experience
  • CPA and/or MBA desired but not required
