Job summary

Aalo Atomics in Austin, TX is seeking a Senior Instrumentation and Controls Test Engineer to develop measurement, control, and automation systems that support our experimental hardware and reactor development.

This hands-on role owns I&C for bench-top to automated test stands, coordinating with test, electrical, software, mechanical, systems engineers, manufacturing and EHS to commission and support a broad range of test equipment.

Qualifications

• Five years of hands-on experience with instrumentation, controls, automation, or integrated test systems.
• Experience selecting and integrating sensors, signal conditioning, and data acquisition for physical experiments or industrial equipment.
• Experience developing PLC-based or industrial controls, including I/O, HMIs, control-loops, and dynamics.
• Experience authoring and executing formal test protocols with traceability and documentation.
• Ability to read wiring diagrams and work with integrated hardware and networks.
• Knowledge of calibration, measurement uncertainty, and data integrity.
• Ability to turn incomplete test requirements into functioning systems.
• Ability to implement controls and interlocks safely in electrical hardware environments.
• Clear technical documentation and collaboration with engineers and technicians.

Responsibilities

• Translate test objectives and operating conditions into measurement and control requirements, including sensors and data needs.
• Develop test methods and procedures mapping requirements to acceptance criteria and data.
• Maintain testing procedures for consistency and audit readiness.
• Select and integrate sensors, signal conditioning, embedded instrumentation, and data acquisition for multiple parameters.
• Design instrument layouts, wiring, and interfaces with other teams.
• Develop PLC logic, HMIs, and test automation; tune control loops for varying conditions.
• Implement alarms, interlocks, and shutdown behavior per requirements and hazard reviews.
• Plan and execute FAT/SAT and calibration checks against requirements.
• Use simulation or HIL methods to verify control sequences before testing.
• Build reliable data logging workflows with traceability of results.
• Troubleshoot sensors, wiring, signaling, and networking; diagnose instrumentation vs control faults.
• Support test execution and data interpretation; evaluate measurement uncertainty.
• Maintain requirements, schematics, I/O lists, and software revisions; coordinate with vendors.
• Develop reusable instrumentation approaches to improve throughput and future validation.
