Job summary

Novartis is expanding Durham campus operations to include Large Molecule drug substance production at a new RTP, NC facility. The Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, will develop and track HSE deliverables, ensuring readiness before operations begin and serving as primary contact for HSE topics.

You will lead occupational safety programs across the site, integrate LMO safety requirements, and collaborate with internal teams and external providers to deliver world-class safety performance.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of HSE program development/management experience in manufacturing or laboratory environments.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Biology, or related field.
• Professional HSE certifications (e.g., CSP, CIH) highly desired.
• Experience supporting design/startup of new LMO/ADP facilities and manufacturing operations.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to advise on complex matters.
• Creative problem solver with strong multi-tasking and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and implementation of robust HSE programs for safe start-up of LMO production.
• Integrate LMO HSE requirements into site-wide processes and training.
• Partner with internal teams and external providers to deliver safety performance.
• Serve as HSE advisor on risk management and regulatory compliance.
• Drive Process Safety, Electrical Safety, Fire Protection, and Emergency Response.
• Collaborate to embed HSE priorities into daily operations.
• Establish and monitor HSE metrics and KPIs.
• Build HSE capabilities through training and governance.
• Ensure risk assessments and hazard analyses for new operations.
• Champion a high-performance safety culture via audits and investigations.
