Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks an Advanced Computing Engineer to design, operate, and maintain HPC clusters and AI systems supporting research activities. You will join the Emerging Technologies & AI and Computing team within the Research Computing group in IT Services.

The role involves designing end-to-end AI/ML architectures, ensuring scalability and performance, and collaborating with researchers to deploy robust, secure solutions.

Qualifications

• BS degree in computer science, engineering, information technology, information systems, science, or related discipline with 8+ years of experience; equivalent combinations may be considered.
• 4+ years managing UNIX/Linux systems.
• 2+ years with configuration management/automation tools (Git, Ansible, Puppet).
• Moderate proficiency in at least one scripting language (Bash, Python).
• Experience with Linux server administration and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

• Advocate HPC and AI clustered computing services to researchers working with large data sets or code development.
• Design end-to-end architecture for AI/ML solutions aligned with ORNL goals and guidelines.
• Implement AI/ML solutions with robust master data management for data integrity and security.
• Ensure availability, performance, scalability, and security of production systems.
• Leverage automation/monitoring to minimize day-to-day maintenance and optimize performance.
• Collaborate with program POCs to install and tune scientific toolsets.
