Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) NCCS is seeking a capable HPC Engineer to provide hands-on support for scientific applications and libraries used on cutting-edge HPC, AI, and advanced computing resources. You will compile, debug, and optimize large-scale codes, resolve system-level bugs, install software, and develop tests for new deployments.

You will collaborate with vendors, contribute to documentation and training, and ensure users have up-to-date information about system changes.

Qualifications

• BS degree with 5+ years of related experience, or MS with 4+ years, or PhD in computer science or related field.
• Experience with multiple programming languages including more than one of the following: Fortran, C, C++, Perl, Python, Shell scripting in Linux/Unix.
• Experience with parallel programming technologies including at least one: MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, HIP, Kokkos, Raja.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of user reported problems and provide hands-on support for HPC applications and libraries.
• Compile and debug large science and engineering applications.
• Identify and resolve system-level bugs with other technical staff.
• Work with vendors to resolve issues and implement changes.
• Install third-party software and provide usage documentation.
• Develop and implement system tests for newly deployed systems.
• Develop and maintain user-facing documentation and reference materials.
• Participate in training development and outreach for users.
• Respond to admin questions and support system status communications.
• Deliver projects such as metrics, new tools, and policy discussions.
