Job summary

Coinbase is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Access & Authorization team to design and operate authentication systems that balance security with a simple user experience. You will build secure, high-throughput services in Go and gRPC used across Coinbase products and partner integrations.

You will lead complex designs for tokens, passkeys, and device-aware authentication, while collaborating with product, security, and infrastructure teams to ensure compliance and reliability.

Qualifications

• 5+ years backend software engineering in production.
• Experience designing secure APIs and OAuth/OpenID/JWT.
• Proficiency with gRPC, Protocol Buffers, Redis or DynamoDB; observability and SLOs.
• Strong cross-functional delivery and communication.
• Responsible use of AI with human oversight.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end design, implementation, and operation of authentication capabilities including OAuth, sessions, tokens, 2FA, account recovery, and edge authorization.
• Build secure Go and gRPC services used across Coinbase’s web, mobile, API, and partner experiences with observability and SLOs.
• Lead technical designs for signed tokens, passkeys, biometric recovery, device-aware auth, and mobile OAuth.
• Partner with product, security, fraud, and infra teams to balance conversion, protection, and regulatory needs.
• Simplify integration patterns and build self-service tooling for safe scale across product teams.
• Mentor engineers through design reviews, pairing, code reviews, and on-call participation.
