Job summary

The Washington Post is seeking a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer for the Subscriptions team. You will build frontend experiences with React and TypeScript while contributing to backend services built with Java and Node.js on AWS.

This frontend-focused role values strong architectural judgment and production-ready delivery. You\'ll own features from design through production, collaborate across product and design teams, and mentor others.

Qualifications

• BA/BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years frontend development with React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
• 3+ years backend development with Java, Node.js, or both.
• 2+ years of experience deploying and operating applications in AWS.
• Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, responsive design, accessibility, and frontend performance.
• Experience with RESTful APIs and distributed backend services.
• Experience with CI/CD and deployment automation.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, Terraform, CloudFormation).
• Experience with Docker/ECS and production observability.
• Experience supporting production apps through on-call rotations.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, deploy, and operate customer-facing applications and services supporting our subscription products.
• Develop modern frontend applications primarily using React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
• Build and improve subscription experiences such as checkout, offers, paywalls, product pages, and subscriber lifecycle flows.
• Own technical solutions from architecture through deployment, observability, and production support.
• Make thoughtful frontend architectural decisions around components, state management, APIs, and performance.
• Build reusable components, shared libraries, and frontend patterns to improve consistency and efficiency.
• Collaborate with backend engineers to define reliable API contracts and integration patterns.
• Work with AWS services and CI/CD, deployment automation, and IaC.
