Job summary

VIAVI Solutions in Indianapolis seeks a Senior Manufacturing Engineer for a new NPI team to bring fiber optic instruments from R&D to volume manufacturing. You own the process flow, tooling, work instructions, and qualification to ensure repeatable, cost-effective production.

Role partners with R&D in Indy and France, plus internal and contract manufacturers. This is a factory process and industrialization position, not design or supervision.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical/Manufacturing/Industrial/Electrical Engineering is required.
• 5+ years in manufacturing or NPI engineering and process development.
• Experience with DFM/DFA, PFMEA, control plans, first article inspection, and capability analysis.
• Strong documentation discipline and clear work instructions.
• Tooling, fixtures, and equipment design/qualification experience.
• Hands-on experience with high-precision assembly and contamination control.
• Knowledge of SPC, process capability (Cpk), and DOE.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (15–25%).

Responsibilities

• Define end-to-end manufacturing processes for fiber optic instruments.
• Develop and qualify optical assembly processes (fiber handling, routing, splicing, connectorization).
• Establish contamination control and product cleanliness standards.
• Design line layout, station ergonomics, and line balance for production.
• Provide DFM/DFA feedback during design reviews; drive cost/yield improvements.
• Spec and qualify tooling, fixtures, and equipment; ensure CM readiness.
• Prepare manufacturing documentation: work instructions, routings, specs.
• Lead pilot builds, transfers, and manufacturing ramp plans.
• Monitor yield, scrap, and cycle times; lead corrective actions.
