Job summary

VIAVI Solutions Inc. in Indianapolis, Indiana seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical design of optical test equipment and systems. You will work with optical, electrical, manufacturing, and product teams to move concepts to production release.

You will prototype, validate, and optimize components and assemblies, including sheet metal enclosures, machined parts, EMI shielding, and cables. Strong SolidWorks, GD&T, and thermal analysis skills are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with relevant design experience.
• Strong proficiency in SolidWorks and GD&T for complex optical/mechanical assemblies.
• Experience with tolerance stack‑ups and thermal analysis in product development.
• Experience creating manufacturing drawings and managing production release.
• Prototyping using 3D printing and traditional fabrication methods.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and development of optical test equipment and systems.
• Collaborate with optical/electrical engineers for system integration.
• Prototype, test, and validate designs to meet reliability and performance goals.
• Create enclosures, machined components, EMI shielding, and fixtures.
• Apply DFM/DFA to optimize cost, quality, and manufacturability.
• Document designs with CAD models, drawings, BOMs, and test plans.
• Mentor junior engineers and work with cross‑functional teams.
