Viavi Solutions Inc. in Calabasas, CA is seeking a Senior Manufacturing Engineer for Global Operations Engineering NPI to advance high-speed Ethernet test instruments from product development into world-class manufacturing.

You will define manufacturing processes, tooling, and test methods, partner with PD, HSE, and contract manufacturers, and lead design-for-manufacturing initiatives to ensure cost, quality, and schedule goals are met.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in an engineering field or related technical discipline.
• 5–8+ years in SMT PCBA manufacturing, box build, or NPI process/test engineering.
• Experience with design-for-manufacturing and manufacturing readiness reviews.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally (>30%).

Duties & Responsibilities

Global Operations Engineering NPI team in Calabasas with bringing VIAVI's next generation of High-Speed Ethernet test instruments from PD (Product Development) into the world class manufacturing operations. As the Senior Manufacturing Engineer, you know how these products get built: the process and test flow, the tooling and fixturing, the work instructions, and the qualification that proves the line can produce them best good, reliable products. You will work in close partnership with the PD HSE and with our internal and contract manufacturing factories.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

NPI Design for Manufacturing, Test and Assembly Develops, implements and maintains methods, operation sequence and processes in the manufacture or fabrication of parts, components, sub‑assemblies and final assemblies. Interfaces with design engineering in coordinating the release of new products. Estimates manufacturing cost, determines time standards, and makes recommendations for tooling and process requirements of new or existing product lines. Maintains records and reporting systems for coordination of manufacturing operations. Lead and create the NPI best manufacturing operations to deliver world class products by defining metrics and processes, testing and readiness of the product launches into the manufacturing readiness. Provide strong technical leadership and guidelines both to the internal and external team through clear analytical direction in resolving operational problems. Project status to deliver management level presentations and technical reports. Establish the Design for Manufacturing Assembly/Test, DFX(DFM/DFT/DFA) to engage the Contract manufacturer from early product life cycle to incorporate the inputs into the design. Establish the manufacturing engineering deliverables of the SMT PCBA processes, Structural test (AOI, Xray, Flying Probe, ICT), JTAG, Sub assembly and System Functional Test and Chassis Box Build assembly. Review Product Line Management (PLM) - Bill of Materials (BOM) & Engineering Change Order (ECO Process Metric standards of the Product, Statistical Process Analysis, Failure Analysis, and data collections. Participate in design reviews as the manufacturing voice; quantify the cost and yield impact of design choices rather than asserting them. NPI Engineering Qualification and test program validation (PROTO, FMEA and DVT). Budget capital planning for project mechanical tools, software, and hardware test equipment. Provide extensive and ongoing support to contract manufacturing counterpart (Contract Manufacturer).

Required Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field. 5~8+ Years in SMT PCBA Manufacturing and Box Build or NPI Process/Test Engineering: Developing and qualifying assembly processes for electronic, electromechanical, or High-Speed Ethernet products. NPI Toolset: Demonstrated command of DFM/DFT/DFA, PFMEA, control plans, first article inspection, process capability analysis, and build manufacturing readiness reviews. Effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously. Both OEMs & third‑party suppliers. Documentation Discipline: Proven ability to author clear, unambiguous work instructions and process specifications that a production operator can follow. Tooling and Fixture Development: Experience specifying and qualifying assembly tooling and fixtures by partnering with the Contract manufacturer counterpart. Statistical Methods: Practical application of SPC, Cpk, and root cause problem-solving methodologies (8D, 4M - Process capability, 5-Why). Demonstrated leadership and self‑motivation; effective cross‑functional collaborator who can fully represent manufacturing engineering on a distributed, multi‑site product development team. Firsthand leadership in developing and transitioning new products into manufacturing. Working with a cross‑functional team to plan and manage engineering changes to manufacture products to meet customer delivery requirements. Good Judgement, Adaptability and Maturity. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (approximately >30%) to support global manufacturing operations.
