Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems seeks a Fiber Optics Manufacturing Engineer to scale and improve manufacturing processes for fiber optic cables and assemblies. You’ll collaborate with fiber optic specialists, production technicians, design engineering, quality, test, and supply chain to transition products from development into reliable production.

You will apply manufacturing engineering fundamentals to develop tooling, documentation, process controls, and production systems that deliver high yield

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or Optical Engineering or equivalent.
• 5+ years of manufacturing engineering experience, including development/improvement of fiber optic or precision assembly processes.
• Experience with fiber optic handling, splicing, testing, or related precision processes.
• Strong skills in process development, control, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.
• Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, RCCA, DOE, SPC, or related methodologies.
• Excellent communication and collaboration across cross-functional teams.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Fiber Optic Specialists and production teams to develop, standardize, and improve fiber optic manufacturing processes.
• Transition fiber optic products from R&D/prototype to repeatable production.
• Develop, implement, and qualify manufacturing processes for fiber optic cables and assemblies balancing quality, performance, throughput, cost, and production rate.
• Develop and optimize processes for fiber handling, routing, splicing, wrapping, jacketing, bonding, termination, and cable assembly.
• Create manufacturing process controls to prevent fiber damage from bending, tension, and handling.
• Develop tooling, fixtures, equipment, and workstations for repeatable production.
• Collaborate with Design Engineering on DFM/ DFA to ensure manufacturability at scale.
• Set process parameters, acceptance criteria, inspection methods, and process controls for critical fibers.
• Create and maintain documentation including SOPs, flow diagrams, pFMEAs, and control plans.
• Work with Quality and Test Engineering on inspection and test methods for fiber optics.
• Use data to identify variation, establish process capability, and improve yield, scrap, and throughput.
• Lead RCCA-driven improvements and cross-functional troubleshooting.
• Provide hands-on training and technical support to production teams.
• Support capacity planning and production readiness.
