Job summary

Virginia Department of Health in Abingdon, VA, seeks an Environmental Engineer Senior to lead drinking water projects and ensure SDWA compliance. You will supervise engineering functions for a regional office and serve as a subject matter expert, providing technical guidance to staff and partners.

Candidates should have knowledge of drinking water regulations, strong reporting and communication skills, and the ability to supervise. PE or EIT licensure is preferred.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of sanitary engineering pertaining to drinking water.
• Knowledge of state and federal laws, rules and regulations governing drinking water.
• Knowledge of management practices and principles and administrative and supervisory principles.
• Ability to make sound engineering decisions.
• Ability to monitor and assess progress and interpret and apply federal and state laws and regulations.
• Ability to create technical reports.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with internal staff, officials, engineers and other public health groups.

Responsibilities

• Protects the public health by ensuring that public drinking water is in compliance with the SDWA and Waterworks Regulations.
• Supervises or leads engineering functions for assigned regional area or office.
• Services as a subject matter expert providing technical and procedural guidance and expertise to other staff.
• Establishes priorities and assigns work; audits and approves other engineers' work.
• Participates in engineering design evaluation for new waterworks or waterworks modifications.
• Monitors facilities and conducts inspections; interprets regulations for owners, operators, local governments and consultants.
• Evaluates and recommends revisions to regulations; facilitates implementation and prepares reports.
• Provides training and technical assistance to staff and the public.
