Job Duties

Protects the public health by ensuring that public drinking water is in compliance with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the Waterworks Regulations. Supervises or leads engineering functions for assigned regional area or office. Services as a subject matter expert providing technical and procedural guidance and expertise to other staff. Characteristics include establishing priorities and assigning work, auditing and approving other engineers' work, participates in engineering design evaluation for new waterworks or waterworks considering modification, monitoring new and improved facilities, conducting non-routine and final inspections, as well as interpreting regulations for owners, operators, local government, engineering consultants, and other staff. Performs routine sanitary surveys at and provides technical assistance to surface water treatment plants and systems. Evaluates and recommends revisions to local, state, or national regulations, facilitates implementation of regulations, supervises preparation of reports and provides training and technical assistance to other staff and the public. Most activities are handled independently with supervision required only for very large projects or the most complex issues.

Minimum Qualifications

Additional Considerations
  • • Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer in Training (EIT) in Virginia preferred.
