Job summary

Liberty Mutual Insurance is expanding our Environmental Claims team and seeking an experienced Environmental Claims Professional to manage high-exposure environmental, pollution, toxic tort, and mass litigation claims within our Commercial Specialty Lines portfolio.

This Senior Technical Claims Specialist role empowers you to own claims from coverage analysis through litigation management, collaborating with policyholders, brokers, reinsurers, underwriting, and defense counsel.

Qualifications

• 5-7 years of commercial casualty claims experience, including environmental or pollution claims handling.
• Proven ability to handle complex, litigated matters independently, including coverage analysis, reserving, and settlement negotiation.
• Strong command of environmental coverage issues, such as pollution liability, CGL pollution exclusions, and third-party bodily injury and property damage from contamination.
• Experience managing defense counsel and consultants.
• Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
• Advanced Environmental Claims and/or Pollution Claims experience preferred.
• Experience with mass litigation and/or toxic tort required.
• Ability to obtain/maintain All-Lines Adjuster License.

Responsibilities

• Own the claim end to end. Determine coverage, investigate, assess liability, set and adjust reserves, evaluate exposure, negotiate settlements, and authorize payment.
• Drive litigation strategy. Review pleadings, claim files, and investigation materials, then set plans to resolve suits, including coverage positions and discovery plans.
• Build the right team for each matter, coordinating Home Office Legal, defense counsel, and environmental resources.
• Manage outside counsel, overseeing strategy, practices, and billing to align with outcomes.
• Protect the claim and data; maintain financial processing integrity and confidentiality.
• Mentor and partner. Coach colleagues and liaise with Underwriting, Reinsurance, and other partners.
• Stay ahead of the law by tracking legislation and court decisions affecting pollution and specialty coverages.
• Contribute to special projects that shape team workflows.
