Job summary

Headway is building a new mental healthcare system and seeks a Senior Engineering Manager to own the Billing System platform, guiding the design of a new orchestration layer and state machine for financial lifecycle actions.

You will work with Finance, Accounting, and cross-functional teams to define contracts, standards, and governance for high-stakes financial data and ensure scalable, reliable workflows.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager leading platform or infrastructure teams across multiple teams or a broad cross-org mandate.
• 5–7+ years as a Software Engineer with depth in backend and distributed systems (financial state machines, event-driven architectures, workflow orchestration).
• Led platform work with customers that are other engineering teams, defining contracts and guardrails.
• Track record in domains with data integrity and financial correctness (billing, payments, ledgers, claims).
• Partnered with Finance, Accounting, or compliance when their work depends on your systems.
• Strong prioritization and roadmap judgment; able to sequence migrations with cross-team dependencies.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical strategy for the Billing System platform and drive its next chapter.
• Build the orchestration layer state machine with allowed actions and governance.
• Develop guardrail APIs that gate other systems’ writes.
• Implement automated remittance ingestion, refunds and recoups, and reconciliation workflows.
• Design durable workflow orchestration with shadow-mode simulation and explainability guarantees.
• Collaborate with Finance and Accounting to ensure outputs feed the company’s financial records.
