Job summary

Headway is building a new mental healthcare system accessible to all. The Senior Engineering Manager for the Billing System will own the technical strategy of the financial platform that handles 1.5M+ appointments, design the new orchestration layer, guardrails, and state machine, and partner with Finance and Accounting to ensure accurate, auditable outcomes.

You’ll lead multiple teams, shape architecture, and drive durable orchestration across systems, with a compensation package and equity,

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager leading platform or infrastructure teams.
• 5–7+ years as a Software Engineer with backend/distributed systems depth.
• Experience defining contracts and guardrails for internal engineering customers.
• Track record in data integrity and financial correctness domains (billing/payments).
• Partnered with Finance/Accounting or compliance to align system output with business needs.
• Strong prioritization and roadmap judgment across dependent migrations.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical strategy for the Billing System platform and its next phase.
• Drive a new orchestration layer with a codified state machine and guardrails.
• Develop APIs, automated remittance, refunds, and safe re-settle capabilities.
• Set direction for state-machine design, snapshots, explainability, and shadow-mode.
• Collaborate with Finance and Accounting to ensure accurate financial records.
