Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to own outcomes for a defined engineering domain, build and grow the team, and operate with significant autonomy against a clear mandate.

You will recruit 4 exceptional engineers, define how they work, and drive a root‑cause, shift‑left approach to engineering productivity, measured by system‑level metrics such as MRPM, pipeline success rate, and latency.

Qualifications

• Track record leading small, high-autonomy engineering teams.
• Deep comfort with CI/CD and build systems.
• Demonstrated root-cause instinct and rigor.
• Comfort operating under metrics-driven accountability and reporting.
• Strong executive-level communication with engineering leadership.

Responsibilities

• Define and refine the operating model for the non-linear productivity pilot.
• Identify and prioritize non-linear productivity opportunities across the SDLC.
• Translate broad mandate into a concrete 3-month roadmap.
• Personally source and recruit 4 engineers for the pilot squad.
• Negotiate allocation models with EMs on current teams.
• Set direction and working norms for a small, fast-moving team.
• Mentor engineers in root-cause analysis and shift-left thinking.
• Lead hands-on investigation to baseline the three metrics (MRPM, pipeline latency, success rate).
• Design fixes that scale and improve context for humans and agents.
• Track metric movement and report honestly to leadership.
• Capture reusable patterns and playbooks for org-wide adoption.
• Define graduation criteria from pilot to permanent function.
