Job summary

GitLab is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Git team to guide senior and staff engineers working on the Git version control system and related infrastructure. This role emphasizes building a culture of technical rigor, ownership, and accountability while balancing upstream open source work with GitLab priorities.

You will lead in a deeply technical, upstream-first environment, collaborating across distributed teams and stakeholders to drive performance and scalability improvements.

Qualifications

• Experience managing engineering teams with direct reports and performance reviews.
• Proven ability to guide engineers through ambiguity and long-horizon technical work.
• Strong written communication and asynchronous collaboration across distributed teams.
• Hands-on background with version control systems and distributed infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Manage a team of senior and staff engineers working on the Git version control system and related infrastructure.
• Build a team culture focused on technical rigor, accountability, and ownership.
• Drive execution on complex, long-horizon work spanning performance, scalability, maintainability, and core Git architecture.
• Balance upstream open source development with GitLab product and infrastructure priorities.
• Support engineers’ growth through feedback, mentoring, and career development.
• Foster strong written communication and asynchronous alignment across a distributed team.
• Partner with downstream teams and stakeholders who rely on Git expertise for performance and roadmap clarity.
