Job description

Our client is an established engineering, construction management, and design-build organization delivering complex building infrastructure, MEP, energy efficiency, and modernization projects across healthcare, higher education, institutional, commercial, and public-sector environments.

They are seeking an experienced Senior Engineer / Engineering Lead to provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary projects while taking on increasing responsibility for project execution, technical coordination, mentoring, and client relationships.

This is an opportunity for a strong engineer who has progressed beyond a traditional individual contributor role and is ready for greater leadership responsibility, without requiring that they already have formal department-level management experience.

For the right individual, the position offers a meaningful path toward broader engineering leadership as experience, performance, and organizational knowledge grow.

Overview

The Senior Engineer / Engineering Lead will work within an established multidisciplinary engineering team supporting complex design-build projects involving electrical and mechanical building systems, HVAC, central plants, building controls, electrification, lighting, energy efficiency, decarbonization, and infrastructure modernization.

Candidates may come from either an Electrical or Mechanical Engineering background, with multidisciplinary MEP and building systems experience strongly valued.

Electrical engineering experience is particularly relevant, especially when combined with exposure to mechanical systems, HVAC, energy infrastructure, and integrated project delivery. Mechanical engineers with meaningful electrical and multidisciplinary project experience will also be strongly considered.

The successful candidate may already be the engineer others turn to for technical guidance, difficult project decisions, multidisciplinary coordination, mentoring, or client interaction, even if they have not formally managed an engineering department.

What You'll Do
  • Provide technical leadership across complex electrical, mechanical, MEP, energy, and building infrastructure projects.
  • Lead and coordinate engineering activities across assigned projects from planning and design through construction support and completion.
  • Support projects involving HVAC systems, central plants, boilers, chillers, BAS/BMS and controls, electrification, lighting, electrical infrastructure, energy efficiency, and infrastructure modernization.
  • Coordinate effectively across mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines.
  • Review engineering designs, calculations, specifications, drawings, and technical deliverables.
  • Help coordinate engineering priorities and resources based on project schedules, technical requirements, and client commitments.
  • Participate in project planning, design reviews, constructability discussions, estimating, field coordination, and major technical decisions.
  • Identify technical and project risks and work collaboratively with engineering and construction teams to develop practical solutions.
  • Work closely with construction management and project leadership to support successful design-build project delivery.
  • Serve as a technical resource to engineers, project managers, construction professionals, clients, and other project stakeholders.
  • Mentor and support the development of less-experienced engineering professionals.
  • Participate in client meetings and develop increasing responsibility for client communication and relationships.
  • Contribute to engineering standards, quality controls, processes, and best practices.
  • Take on increasing responsibility for projects, people, clients, and engineering operations as capabilities and experience develop.
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Progressive engineering experience involving MEP, building systems, energy, infrastructure, or design-build projects.
  • Strong technical experience with complex electrical and/or mechanical building systems.
  • Understanding of multidisciplinary MEP systems and the interaction between mechanical and electrical disciplines.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership through project ownership, multidisciplinary coordination, mentoring, client interaction, or serving as a technical resource to other engineers.
  • Experience working across multiple projects, technical priorities, schedules, and deadlines.
  • Experience with design-build, construction management, integrated project delivery, or close collaboration between engineering and construction teams is strongly preferred.
  • Strong engineering judgment and ability to independently evaluate and resolve technical challenges.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, architects, project managers, contractors, construction professionals, facility owners, and clients.
  • Experience with healthcare, higher education, institutional, commercial, or public-sector facilities is valuable.
  • Experience with existing-building modernization, central plants, infrastructure replacement, energy efficiency, electrification, or complex institutional facilities is highly relevant.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration is preferred, but not required.

Formal people-management experience is not required.

Location
  • Position is based in the Capital Region / Albany, New York Metropolitan Area.
  • This is primarily an on-site/office-based position with regular interaction across engineering, project management, construction management, and senior leadership.
  • Periodic travel may be required for client meetings, project coordination, field investigations, and site support.
  • Relocation assistance may be available for the right candidate.
Why This Opportunity
  • Step into a visible technical leadership role without needing to already be a department manager.
  • Work across engineering, construction management, and design-build project delivery.
  • Lead complex multidisciplinary projects and expand your influence beyond individual engineering assignments.
  • Work closely with experienced engineering, project, construction, and company leadership.
  • Mentor developing engineers and help shape technical standards and project execution.
  • Gain greater exposure to clients, project strategy, resource planning, and engineering operations.
  • Build toward broader engineering leadership as your responsibilities and experience grow.
  • For the right individual, there is a meaningful long-term path toward an Engineering Director or comparable leadership role.
