Job summary

OpenAI, Inc. is seeking an experienced energy lawyer to support the business on legal matters related to energy and power infrastructure for OpenAI’s data center portfolio.

This cross-functional role partners with energy, infrastructure development, engineering, procurement, and finance teams to advise on complex regulatory issues and to structure, negotiate, and manage the transactions that secure reliable, cost-effective power for OpenAI’s long-term infrastructure ambitions.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of legal experience with a focus on complex commercial energy transactions.
• JD and license to practice in CA.
• Experience in-house, at a law firm, or both, advising energy companies, utilities, developers, or infrastructure investors.

Responsibilities

• Own legal strategy and risk management for OpenAI’s energy procurement and power infrastructure transactions.
• Draft, negotiate, and advise on power purchase agreements, energy supply and hedging arrangements, and utility service contracts.
• Structure and negotiate interconnection, transmission, and utility infrastructure arrangements.
• Advise leadership on legal and regulatory considerations for energy and data center strategy.
• Support partnerships involving renewable generation, energy storage, and on-site power solutions.
• Develop legal frameworks for energy procurement and project development.
• Coordinate with finance and operations on pricing, credit, milestones, etc.
• Collaborate on regulatory issues affecting energy transactions and tariffs.
• Build scalable contracting processes to support rapid energy development.
