Job summary

Paramedic Services of Illinois is seeking an EMS Medical Coding Specialist to accurately assign ICD-10-CM diagnoses and HCPCS transport codes for emergency services, including ground and air transports.

This senior role requires expert knowledge of CMS billing rules and AHIMA guidelines, with a focus on optimal reimbursement while maintaining strict compliance with federal and state regulations.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3–5 years EMS/ambulance medical coding experience.
• Active CPC, CCS, or COC credential; CPC-P or AMPA EMT-Coder preferred.
• Expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM, HCPCS Level II, and CMS ambulance billing rules.

Responsibilities

• Review PCRs to assign ICD-10-CM diagnoses and HCPCS transport codes (A0426-A0436).
• Evaluate documentation to support BLS, ALS-1, ALS-2, SCT levels.
• Apply modifiers for Medicare/Medicaid claims (e.g., QL, QM, QN).
• Query providers for incomplete documentation per AHIMA guidelines.
• Maintain coding accuracy rate 95%+ on audits.
• Submit clean claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers.
