Job summary

Paramedic Services of Illinois is seeking an EMS Medical Coding Specialist to assign ICD-10-CM and HCPCS codes for emergency medical services encounters, including ground and air transports. The senior role requires expert knowledge and adherence to CMS rules to ensure compliant and optimal reimbursement.

You will review PCRs, apply modifiers, query providers for documentation gaps, and coordinate with billing to submit clean claims while meeting audit standards.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3–5 years of EMS/ambulance medical coding experience.
• Active CPC, CCS, or COC credential from AAPC or AHIMA; CPC-P or AMPA EMT-Coder preferred.
• Expert-level knowledge of ICD-10-CM, HCPCS Level II, and CMS ambulance billing rules.
• Experience with Medicare ambulance billing, including ABN requirements and transport certification statements.
• Proficiency with EMS billing software (Zoll Billing, TriTech, ESO, ImageTrend).
• Familiarity with federal and state ambulance reimbursement regulations.

Responsibilities

• Review and abstract PCRs to assign ICD-10-CM codes and HCPCS transport codes (A0426–A0436).
• Evaluate documentation to support BLS, ALS levels and SCT transports.
• Apply appropriate modifiers for Medicare/Medicaid claims.
• Query EMS providers for incomplete documentation per AHIMA guidelines.
• Maintain coding accuracy rate of 95% or higher on audits.
• Submit clean claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers.
• Review and resolve coding-related denials and appeals.
• Coordinate with billing for claims submission and follow-up.
