Job summary

Paramedic Services of Illinois, Inc. is seeking an experienced EMS Medical Coding Specialist to accurately assign ICD-10-CM and HCPCS codes for EMS encounters, including ground and air transport. The role demands expert knowledge of billing regulations and strong auditing skills to maximize compliant reimbursements.

Senior-level expectations include reviewing PCRs, querying documentation, and ensuring 95% coding accuracy in audits while maintaining compliance with AHIMA and OIG guidelines.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3–5 years of EMS/ambulance medical coding experience.
• Active CPC, CCS, or COC credential from AAPC or AHIMA; CPC-P or AMPA EMT-Coder preferred.
• Expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM, HCPCS Level II, CMS ambulance billing rules.
• Experience with Medicare ambulance billing, ABN requirements, and transport certification statements.
• Proficiency with EMS billing software (Zoll Billing, TriTech, ESO, ImageTrend).
• Strong understanding of federal and state ambulance reimbursement regulations.

Responsibilities

• Review PCRs and assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and HCPCS transport codes (A0426–A0436).
• Evaluate documentation for BLS, ALS-1/ALS-2, and SCT levels; apply modifiers for Medicare/Medicaid claims.
• Submit clean claims and resolve denials, underpayments, and appeals.
• Coordinate with billing staff to ensure seamless claims submission and follow-up.
• Participate in internal audits and respond to external audit requests.
