Job summary

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is seeking an Associate General Counsel — Employment Law in Boston. You will serve as the primary employment-law partner to HR and senior leadership, handling day-to-day counseling, investigations, and enterprise risk management within the healthcare and health insurance context.

The role requires a J.D., MA Bar admission, and 8+ years of experience across federal and MA employment laws, including FMLA, MEPA, and wage-act compliance.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Active member in good standing of the Massachusetts Bar.
• Eight+ years of progressive employment law experience.
• Deep expertise in federal and Massachusetts employment laws (Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA, MEPA, MA Wage Act, MA PFML).
• Experience managing employment litigation and representing employers before administrative agencies (EEOC, MCAD, MA AG).
• In-house or law firm background with strategic advisor role to senior leaders.
• Excellent written and oral communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
• Ability to manage high volume matters in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Serve as primary employment law partner to HR and Company leadership with proactive, solutions-focused counsel.
• Advise on employee relations issues including investigations, leaves (FMLA, PFML MA), accommodations, performance management, discipline, and terminations.
• Counsel on wage-and-hour compliance, hiring practices, restructurings, and reductions-in-force.
• Lead immigration matters (visa sponsorship, green cards, I-9 compliance).
• Develop and update employment policies, handbooks, and workplace procedures to reflect current law.
• Monitor regulatory trends in employment law, including AI, pay transparency, data privacy, and OFCCP/MEPA compliance.
• Advise on pay equity compliance and MEPA obligations; oversee compensation auditing.
• Provide guidance on NLRA labor relations and government contractor requirements (if applicable).
• Oversee dispute resolution and litigation management; coordinate with outside counsel; track budgets and risk.
• Deliver training for managers, HR, and employees on harassment, documentation, and compliance obligations.
• Collaborate with legal on healthcare industry-specific employment matters (HIPAA, ACA, ERISA).
