Job summary

National Grid in Syracuse, NY seeks a Senior Engineer for the Control & Integration team to lead substation automation projects and SCADA design. You will work on digital substations, RTUs, IEDs, and network configurations, while mentoring junior staff and coordinating with external partners.

The role requires strong problem solving, electrical engineering fundamentals, and familiarity with IEC61850, DNP3, and network protocols; on-site work in NY is expected.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering, power concentration preferred.
• Familiarity with RS232/485, DNP3, and IEC61850.
• Proficiency with TCP/IP, UDP, and Ethernet; network concepts preferred.
• Familiarity with IEC 61850 Goose Messaging and Sampled Values is a plus.
• Ability to read electrical schematics; knowledge of 3-phase AC and DC systems.
• Experience with substation testing and commissioning.
• Proficient MS Office suite (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Visio).
• Strong problem solving and analytical skills; good communication.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering, design, integration, and support of substation control, metering, SCADA, and comm systems.
• Develop and maintain digital substation architectures, topologies, network configurations, and data flows.
• Define functional requirements and integration strategies for RTUs, IEDs, meters, relays, and related equipment.
• Prepare and review engineering deliverables, diagrams, and technical documentation.
• Provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary teams and external partners.
• Implement QA/QC processes and perform technical reviews for accuracy and quality.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory and cybersecurity standards, including NERC-CIP.
• Support operations and field personnel; assist in storm restoration as needed.
• Develop internal capability through mentoring and onboarding support.
