Job summary

Veeco Instruments Inc. in the United States seeks a Senior Electrical Engineer to design precision motion control, sensing, and embedded electronic systems for advanced semiconductor, photonics, and MEMS platforms.

You will own electrical subsystems from architecture to validation, collaborating with mechanical, software and systems teams to solve tough technical problems in production environments. The role emphasizes hands‑on ownership, real‑time software in C/C++, and experience with Beckhoff

Qualifications

  • BS in Electrical Engineering with 8+ years of directly relevant experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with motion control, embedded electronics, and real-time software.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as projects require.

Responsibilities

  • Create and refine high‑performance, multi‑axis motion control systems that deliver nanometer‑scale positioning.
  • Integrate advanced sensing technologies—optical, capacitive, inductive, and laser‑based—into closed‑loop control architectures.
  • Model system behavior, perform tuning and stability analysis, and ensure robust operation across real‑world conditions.
  • Translate system‑level requirements into detailed electrical and control specifications for actuators, sensors, encoders, and electronics.
  • Evaluate technologies and suppliers with a balance of performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Develop real‑time control software using C, C++, Python, and IEC 61131‑3 Structured Text.
  • Implement motion, sequencing, and safety logic on PLC platforms, with strong emphasis on Beckhoff (TwinCAT, TwinSAFE).
  • Integrate and debug industrial communication networks such as EtherCAT and DeviceNet.
  • Define board‑level architectures, power budgets, timing constraints, and signal‑integrity requirements.
  • Create detailed schematics including power delivery, clocking, analog front ends, and communication interfaces (UART, I2C, SPI, USB).
  • Specify PCB fabrication requirements such as stack‑ups, materials, impedance control, and controlled differential pairs.
  • Develop embedded firmware in C/C++ and support hardware bring‑up.
  • Design and execute verification and validation plans covering motion performance, calibration, thermal behavior, and reliability.
  • Lead hardware bring‑up and hands‑on debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and JTAG tools.
  • Troubleshoot challenging system‑level issues using data analysis, modeling, and real‑time diagnostics.
  • Participate in DFM/DFT reviews and collaborate with manufacturing partners to transition designs into production.
  • Document designs, test results, and revisions to ensure long‑term maintainability and product success.
  • Support field deployments and critical customer escalations when your expertise is needed most.
