Job summary

Net Power seeks an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to support development, engineering, and execution of complex power generation projects. The role includes engineering reviews, calculations, studies, and reports, with field investigations and technical leadership across the full project lifecycle.

The successful candidate will provide leadership from feasibility through commissioning, focusing on onsite generation, microgrid controls, energy storage, and data-center reliability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (ABET-accredited).
  • 8–10 years of progressive electrical engineering experience in power generation, microgrids, industrial power systems, or data centers.
  • Experience designing behind-the-meter or islanded power systems capable of operating independently from the utility grid.
  • Strong knowledge of medium- and low-voltage power generation and distribution systems.
  • Experience with onsite generation, generator paralleling, microgrid controls, protective relaying, grounding, and black-start systems.
  • Experience performing or reviewing power system studies using ETAP, SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, PSCAD, PSS E, PowerFactory, or comparable software.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code and applicable IEEE, NFPA, NEMA, UL, and local requirements.
  • Ability to travel periodically to project sites, vendor facilities, and commissioning activities.
  • Active Professional Engineer license or ability to obtain PE licensure (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Lead the electrical design of islanded microgrids and onsite power plants for large-scale data centers.
  • Develop reliable power system architectures incorporating engines, gas turbines, energy storage, renewables, and backups.
  • Establish design criteria, basis-of-design documents, system narratives, equipment specifications, and engineering standards.
  • Design medium- and low-voltage generation and distribution systems, including substations, switchgear, transformers, busways, UPS systems, and ATS.
  • Develop single-line diagrams, protection & control diagrams, grounding plans, equipment layouts, cable schedules, and interconnection drawings.
  • Define generation dispatch, load-sharing, synchronization, load-shedding, spinning-reserve, black-start, and system-restoration strategies.
  • Engineer electrical systems to meet data center availability, redundancy, maintainability, and resiliency objectives (N, N+1, 2N, distributed redundancy).
  • Perform or oversee load-flow, short-circuit, protective-device coordination, arc-flash, motor-starting, transient-stability, harmonic, grounding, and reliability studies.
  • Develop protection philosophies and relay settings for generators, transformers, switchgear, feeders, and storage.
  • Coordinate microgrid controllers, power plant control systems, generator controls, EMS, SCADA, and BMS.
  • Evaluate dynamic system performance during generator trips, large load steps, equipment failures, and transitions between operating states.
  • Support electrical equipment selection, bid evaluations, vendor reviews, FATs, and procurement activities.
  • Coordinate designs with mechanical, civil, structural, controls, fire protection, telecommunications, and data center teams.
  • Work with authorities, permitting agencies, owners, contractors, equipment manufacturers, and commissioning providers.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, startup, commissioning, testing, and performance validation.
  • Review submittals, RFIs, field changes, test procedures, and commissioning results.
  • Identify technical and operational risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical direction to teams and partners.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging onsite generation, energy storage, microgrid control, and mission-critical power technologies.
