Job summary

Jobtailor in Alabama is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to design, develop and maintain control systems for unmanned aircraft and related electronic subsystems.

You will lead design efforts, select reliable components, and document complex systems while collaborating with avionics, embedded and RF teams. A senior engineer will mentor others and drive project cost/schedule decisions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or equivalent combo of education and experience.
  • 5–8 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficient with office software and engineering tools in area of expertise.
  • Experienced using Altium Designer for schematic capture and PCB layout.
  • Experience in RF, embedded control, FPGA.
  • Power electronics experience including motors and battery tech (lead acid, NiMH, Li-ion).
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex systems.
  • Familiar with LVDS, I2C, HDMI, UART, SPI, CAN, USB protocols.
  • ITAR/EAR compliance eligibility as a U.S. person or ability to obtain export license.
  • U.S. Citizenship required. Some travel up to 30% for flight test operations.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain electrical control systems and/or components to required specifications.
  • Select components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability.
  • Conduct general engineering and design of electronic systems on small unmanned aircraft vehicles.
  • Perform detailed design, documentation and testing of electronic and mechanical components, equipment and subsystems.
  • Operate computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment.
  • Perform electronic engineering support activities on R&D projects.
  • Coordinate manufacturing, construction, installation, maintenance, support, documentation and testing activities.
  • Inspect completed installations and observe operations for conformance to design, equipment and safety standards.
  • Work with avionics, embedded systems and RF links; support Flight Test operations as needed.
  • Troubleshoot complex systems and document designs with engineering drawings and written descriptions.
  • Perform design and analysis tasks and contribute to budgets and cost estimates.
  • Assess root causes, research and re-engineer alternate solutions, and contribute to product sustainability and reliability.
  • Make complex design decisions and decisions affecting project costs and schedules.
  • Provide technical supervision across disciplines and lead a small team or project.

Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related is required or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

  • Minimum of 5–8 years of relevant experience

  • Proficient with office software, computer-based productivity tools and other software tools in one's area of expertise

  • Experienced using Altium Designer for schematic capture and PCB layout

  • Experienced in one or more areas: Radio Frequency (RF), embedded control, FPGA

  • Experienced with power electronics, including motors and Battery Technology (lead acid, Nickel metal hybrid & Lithium ion)

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex systems

  • Demonstrated familiarity of common industry protocols (LVDS, I2C, HDMI, UART, SPI, CAN, USB)

  • Knowledge of Engineering fundamentals, mathematics, physics & material properties

  • Some travel may be required in support of flight test operations (up to 30%)

  • Must have a clean driving record

  • ITAR/EAR compliance eligibility as a U.S. person or ability to obtain an export license

  • U.S. Citizenship required

  • Must be willing to work on government contracts and have the ability to obtain a security clearance
