Job summary

Public Library of Science is seeking an Associate Editorial Director for a 2-year fixed-term role. The position is fully remote for candidates based in FL, IL, MA, MD, NY, PA, TX, VA, and will oversee PLOS Biology and PLOS Medicine with line-management of Editors-in-Chief.

You will drive editorial strategy, manage budgets, and lead cross-journal initiatives across a global portfolio, partnering with editorial boards and in-house teams to advance open science, diversity and high-quality content.

Qualifications

• PhD and post-doctoral experience in a relevant subject area.
• 5+ years of editorial experience with increasing managerial responsibility in STM publishing.
• Track record managing multiple journals and international teams.
• Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in science publishing.
• Strong business acumen and broad scientific networks.
• Demonstrated strategic thinking and ability to innovate.

Responsibilities

• Develop editorial strategy for a portfolio of journals aligned with Open Science and DEI.
• Identify opportunities to expand the portfolio in line with strategy.
• Oversee multi-term performance metrics for journals.
• Manage budgets with directors to ensure quality and efficiency.
• Oversee editorial workflows, systems and reporting with Operations.
• Collaborate with Marketing to promote journal content and open science practices.
• Lead cross-journal initiatives and manage editorial partnerships.
• Manage a team of editorial staff and foster cross-cultural collaboration.
