Job summary

Ginkgo Bioworks seeks a Software Engineer III to join the Automation Systems Team in Boston, MA, designing and maintaining robust drivers for robotic lab systems as part of Catalyst.

The role emphasizes cross-functional collaboration, experience with Python, and familiarity with lab automation and real-time systems. Occasional travel to customer sites and in-office collaboration are expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 2–4 years of professional software development experience, with a focus on hardware integration, embedded systems, or driver development.
• Extensive experience with Python.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Familiarity with laboratory automation, robotics, or scientific instrumentation is highly beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain robust, high-performance software drivers using Python and/or C#/.NET for lab automation hardware.
• Deeply understand and implement low-level hardware communication protocols (RS-232, USB, TCP/IP).
• Develop drivers with a focus on reliability and device abstraction layers for high-level apps.
• Contribute to Catalyst stack integration, testing, and validation with scientists and QA teams.
• Provide field support and diagnostics, including remote troubleshooting and documenting workarounds.
