Job summary

Ginkgo Bioworks is seeking a Software Engineer III to design, develop, test, and support drivers for robotic lab systems in Boston. You will work on Catalyst, the software stack powering automated lab hardware, collaborating with scientists and QA to ensure reliability and performance.

The role emphasizes cross-functional teamwork, experience with hardware integration, and real-time software practices. Occasional travel to customer sites and a mix of on-site duties are expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 2-4 years of professional software development experience, with a focus on hardware integration, embedded systems, or driver development.
• Extensive experience with Python.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Familiarity with laboratory automation, robotics, or scientific instrumentation is highly beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain robust, high-performance software drivers for lab automation hardware.
• Integrate and validate drivers with the Catalyst stack and collaborate with scientists and QA teams.
• Develop and maintain automated unit and integration tests and hardware simulation environments.
• Provide field support and diagnostics, including remote troubleshooting and rapid issue resolution.
• Contribute to device abstraction layer design for high-level applications and robust interfaces.
