Job summary

Baylor Genetics is seeking a Senior Director of Software Engineering to lead the Bioinformatics Software Engineering team and drive strategy, architecture, delivery, and operational support of clinical genomic software platforms.

This senior leader will partner with R&D, clinical lab, quality, and product teams to define roadmaps, manage delivery commitments, and ensure scalable, compliant production systems across bioinformatics and reporting operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, Genomics, Data Science, or related field.
• 12+ years in software engineering, bioinformatics software development, clinical genomics technology, or related roles.
• 7+ years leading software engineering teams with direct people management.
• Proven experience defining software engineering strategy, roadmaps, and operating models.
• Experience with production-grade software, bioinformatics workflows, data platforms, or regulated environments.
• Knowledge of software architecture, APIs, data integration, and modern SDLC practices.
• Experience with quality/regulatory, privacy, security, traceability and audit-readiness in clinical environments.
• Preferred: Master’s/PhD; 12+ years leading teams; experience across platforms; AI-enabled engineering; CAP/CLIA-regulated environments.

Responsibilities

• Define and own the software engineering vision, roadmap, and operating model.
• Lead and mentor a high-performing team of engineers and bioinformatics engineers.
• Oversee production-grade platforms, workflows, data systems, and reporting solutions.
• Modernize legacy systems, automate workflows, containerize, and optimize compute strategies.
• Establish SLAs, incident response, and post-release monitoring for critical systems.
• Collaborate with R&D, clinical lab, quality, operations, product, and executives to align roadmaps.
• Ensure compliance with quality, regulatory, privacy, security, and audit requirements.
