Job summary

Interstate Waste Services is seeking a Level A Fleet Mechanic/Technician to be the top technical expert in the shop, handling advanced diagnostics, complete rebuilds, and advising on all vehicle systems to drive uptime and safety.

You will lead and train Level B–E technicians, diagnose complex issues, and ensure compliance with DOT/OSHA standards while supporting maintenance programs across the fleet.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; additional technical training strongly preferred.
• 5+ years of hands-on diesel mechanic experience including diagnostics and major component overhauls.
• CDL Class B or A with air brake endorsement preferred due to road tests and movement of collection vehicles on public roads.
• Expert-level knowledge of heavy truck systems and diagnostic tools.

Responsibilities

• Lead diagnosis and resolution of complex, intermittent, or chronic issues involving engine performance and emissions systems.
• Provide on-the-job training, coaching, and quality checks for Level B–E technicians.
• Analyze repeat repairs and PM findings; recommend changes to PM intervals and inspection checklists.
• Ensure all work complies with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and state/local environmental regulations, and participate in safety audits.
