Job summary

Interstate Waste Services is seeking a Level B Fleet Mechanic/Technician to diagnose and repair diesel and heavy equipment, including engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems. The role supports DOT compliance, preventive maintenance, and road-call response across the NYC tri-state area.

The technician will mentor Level C staff, document work orders thoroughly, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives like PM compliance and parts standardization.

Qualifications

• Requires 3–5+ years hands-on diesel/heavy equipment experience and diagnostics.
• Must be able to read OEM manuals and wiring diagrams.
• ASE certifications and CDL are preferred.
• Experience with refuse/solid waste fleet operations is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair diesel and heavy truck systems, including engines, drivetrains, brakes, hydraulics and electrical.
• Perform DOT-compliant inspections and preventive maintenance; document and close out defects.
• Respond to road calls in the NYC tri-state area and coordinate repairs or towing as needed.
• Mentor Level C technicians and document work orders with accurate labor hours and parts used.
