Job summary

Justrite Safety Group in Mattoon, IL is seeking a Sr Design Engineer to drive the mechanical design of fabricated sheet metal cabinets and related accessories from concept through production. You will generate 3D CAD models and drawings, maintain BOMs, and lead DFМ improvements across fabrication, welding, finishing, and assembly.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.
• 6+ years of product design experience in manufactured goods; strong preference for fabricated metal products.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred or equivalent) and 2D drawing creation.
• Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and documentation practices for production release.
• Experience collaborating with manufacturing teams on prototypes, pilot builds, and production support.
• Strong problem-solving skills and comfort working hands-on in a factory environment.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop fabricated sheet metal cabinet products and assemblies from concept through production release.
• Create and maintain 3D CAD models, drawings, BOMs, and specifications; ensure accuracy and configuration control.
• Drive design-for-manufacture (DFM) improvements across sheet metal fabrication, welding, finishing, and assembly processes.
• Lead engineering change activities (ECR/ECO): implement product improvements, cost reductions, and issue resolution.
• Support compliance and certification requirements relevant to safety cabinets; coordinate test plans and documentation as needed.
• Conduct engineering analysis to validate designs: tolerance stack-ups, fit/function, structural considerations, latch/door performance, ventilation integration, and durability.
• Partner with Manufacturing Engineering to develop fixtures, work instructions, routings, and standard work for safe production.
• Collaborate with suppliers and internal procurement to qualify components and materials; support should-cost, VA/VE, and alternate sourcing.
• Investigate field and internal issues using structured problem solving; implement corrective/preventive actions with Quality.
• Contribute to technical support for Sales/Customer Service on product applications and customer-driven configurations.
