Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an experienced database professional to own the data platform layer for a federal agency. You will manage physical design, data modeling, and architecture decisions to optimize performance at scale.

Responsibilities include tuning Aurora/DynamoDB/Iceberg tables on S3, designing partitions and indexing strategies, and migrating schemas. You will develop stored procedures and support Apache Ranger access controls while enabling new capabilities within the platform.

Qualifications

• At least seven years of database development and administration experience.
• Bachelor's degree required.
• Sole United States citizenship.
• Ability to obtain a Public Trust determination.
• Experience with Amazon Aurora (PostgreSQL-compatible), DynamoDB, and Apache Iceberg tables on S3.
• Physical design at scale, including partitioning, indexing, and storage layout.
• Query and EXPLAIN-plan tuning on large datasets.
• Logical and physical data modeling.
• Database-architecture design within an established enterprise data platform.
• PL/pgSQL stored procedures and S3 load patterns into the relational and Iceberg stores.
• Basic proficiency in writing, PowerPoint, and Excel.
• Preferred: Schema migration tooling, including AWS Schema Conversion Tool.
• Preferred: Access controls using Apache Ranger.
• Preferred: Neptune or Neo4j.
• Preferred: Federal information technology or high-volume transaction experience.
• Preferred: Familiarity with AI-assisted developer tooling.

Responsibilities

• Own the database layer of a federal agency's enterprise data platform.
• Own physical design, data models, database-architecture decisions, and performance at scale.
• Shape, structure, and tune Amazon Aurora, DynamoDB, and Apache Iceberg tables on Amazon S3.
• Design partitioning, indexing, and storage layout for large datasets.
• Tune queries and execution plans on large datasets.
• Develop and maintain logical and physical data models within the wider platform architecture.
• Manage schema migrations and S3 load patterns into relational and Iceberg stores.
• Develop stored procedures and support Apache Ranger access controls.
• Help launch new capabilities, tools, and lines of business.
