Job summary

Jobtailor in Washington, DC seeks a senior database developer to own the enterprise data platform’s database layer and drive high-scale design and performance optimization across Aurora, DynamoDB, and Iceberg on S3.

You will implement partitioning, indexing, and storage layouts, develop migrations and stored procedures, and enable access controls with Apache Ranger, while collaborating with cross-functional teams on real-world problems.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of database development and administration experience.
• Bachelor's degree.
• Hands-on experience with Amazon Aurora (PostgreSQL-compatible), DynamoDB, and S3 with Apache Iceberg tables.
• Physical design at scale, including partitioning, indexing, and storage layout.
• Query and EXPLAIN-plan tuning on large datasets.
• Logical and physical data modeling.
• PL/pgSQL stored procedures.
• S3 load patterns into relational and Iceberg stores.
• Basic proficiency in writing, PowerPoint, and Excel.
• Sole United States citizenship.
• Ability to obtain a Public Trust determination.
• Ability to commute into Washington, DC regularly.
• Preferred: schema migration tooling, including AWS Schema Conversion Tool.
• Preferred: Apache Ranger access controls.
• Preferred: Neptune or Neo4j.
• Preferred: federal information technology or high-volume transaction experience.
• Preferred: familiarity with AI-assisted developer tooling.

Responsibilities

• Own the database layer of a federal agency's enterprise data platform.
• Lead physical design, data modeling, and performance tuning across Amazon Aurora, DynamoDB, and Apache Iceberg tables on S3.
• Implement partitioning, indexing, storage layout, query tuning, and plan tuning on large datasets.
• Develop schema migrations, S3 load patterns, stored procedures, and Apache Ranger access controls.
• Build new capabilities, tools, and lines of business over time.
• Work with developers, engineers, data scientists, architects, and strategists on complex real-world problems.
• Contribute across strategy formulation and hands-on implementation.
