Job summary

The Hartford is seeking a Data Reliability Engineer to focus on the integrity, quality, and availability of data assets and pipelines. You will partner with the SRE team to ensure trustworthy data products for downstream consumers and will work on the data journey layer.

The role demands hands-on experience with data warehousing, ETL, and cloud environments (AWS/GCP) and a strong emphasis on data quality checks, governance, and observability. Hybrid schedule with 3 days in Hartford, CT offices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; 5+ years in infrastructure, data, or related tech organization.
• 3+ years in Data Engineering, Data Quality, or a specialized SRE role in an enterprise data environment.
• Hands-on experience with data warehousing and data lake technologies, including Snowflake, and cloud environments (AWS/GCP).
• Experience with ETL pipelines using SSIS/SSMS.
• Experience with Informatica, Python/Pyspark, and distributed compute (EMR/Hadoop).
• Knowledge of data quality checks, data governance standards, and DataOps practices.
• Familiarity with cloud services and core capabilities (compute, containers, databases, APIs).
• Exposure to data observability tools (Monte Carlo, Bigeye, Astro Observe, Datafold) or custom solutions.

Responsibilities

• Establish and enforce data service level objectives focused on freshness, completeness, and accuracy.
• Implement data observability to monitor data journeys and detect quality issues in real time.
• Collaborate with Data Engineering to embed reliability patterns into pipelines on EMR/Hadoop, AWS/GCP, and Informatica.
• Automate data validation, reprocessing, backfilling, and other toil-reducing tasks.
• Lead data-focused incident response and blameless post-mortems for data issues.
• Develop runbooks for common data pipeline failures and recovery scenarios.
