Job summary

9amHealth is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to own and evolve our data platform powering clinical operations, BI, and AI initiatives. You will build scalable pipelines, write production Python/SQL, and contribute to backend services in a startup environment with broad ownership.

You will work with Looker/Tableau, AWS Glue, Redshift, and other services to deliver reliable data products while mentoring a small team and advancing AI-assisted development practices.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a hybrid data/backend role.
• Strong software engineering background capable of writing, testing, debugging, and shipping production code.
• Expert-level Python for building production data pipelines and reporting systems.
• Expert-level SQL including window functions, CTEs, recursion, optimization.
• Hands-on experience with AWS data services: Glue, S3, Redshift, Athena, CloudFormation, CloudWatch, IAM.
• Experience with MySQL/Aurora in production.
• Experience building data pipelines with AWS Glue, Spark, dbt, Airflow.
• Deep experience with BI platforms Looker (LookML) or Tableau for semantic models and self-service analytics.
• Solid data modeling knowledge: star/snowflake, SCDs, event-based models.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools and interest in integrating AI into engineering workflows.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL/ELT workflows in Python on AWS.
• Write production-grade Python for DWH logic, reporting jobs, data transformations, and tooling.
• Develop and optimize analytical data models serving self-service BI and advanced analytics.
• Build dashboards and semantic layers in Looker and/or Tableau; own analytics infrastructure quality.
• Contribute backend code in Java (Spring Boot) or Python to support data features and integrations.
• Champion modern AI coding practices across the data team to accelerate delivery and quality.
• Author and maintain SQL assets across Redshift, Aurora/MySQL, and Athena.
• Operate and optimize AWS data infrastructure (Glue, S3, Redshift, Athena, CloudFormation, IAM).
• Collaborate with clinical ops, product, finance, and engineering to translate questions into data products.
• Implement data quality, monitoring, alerting, and incident response for the data platform.
• Contribute to data architecture and AI/ML feature strategy including feature stores and models.
• Mentor the team and help establish standards, reviews, and documentation norms.
