Job summary

Procore seeks a Principal Software Engineer to define and execute long-term backend and AI strategy powering data applications and production-grade data platforms. You will shape architectural standards, governance, and cost-aware design while delivering high-leverage production code across teams.

You will lead cross-functional architecture efforts, mentor engineers, and drive AI-enabled capabilities from RAG pipelines to vector search, ensuring secure and scalable solutions.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of software engineering experience with backend architecture.
• Strong OOP foundations for scalable, modular systems.
• Experience building large-scale data platforms and data-driven apps.
• Expertise designing REST and GraphQL APIs at scale with good DX.
• Hands-on with distributed data processing and streaming (Spark, Kafka).

Responsibilities

• Serve as technical authority for domains; own architecture direction.
• Translate business priorities into scalable backend, data, and AI architectures.
• Define architecture for large-scale data platforms and API surfaces.
• Establish durable data modeling standards across domains.
• Lead design of production-grade AI systems (LLM integration, RAG, vector search).
• Leverage agentic tools to accelerate SDLC and AI-native practices.
• Ensure governance, observability, security, and cost controls.
• Deliver cross-cutting architectural patterns and reference implementations.
• Anticipate scaling risks and guide iterative modernization.
• Partner with product/engineering to turn opportunities into production systems.
• Hands-on leader; mentor senior engineers and raise engineering standards.
