Job summary

Juab County Attorney’s Office in Nephi, Utah seeks a Chief Deputy County Attorney to assist the County Attorney with civil and criminal counsel for county officials, departments, and boards. The role manages a criminal and juvenile calendar, including felony and SVU cases, and drafts ordinances, contracts, and policies while presenting legal opinions in hearings and trials.

The candidate should have extensive public sector experience, strong legal research and writing skills, court appearance

Qualifications

• Public sector or governmental law experience, especially with serious felony matters.
• Strong legal research, writing, and ability to draft clear and effective legal documents, opinions, and briefs.
• Experience appearing in court, handling litigation or prosecution, and presenting arguments before judges, boards, or administrative bodies.
• Proficiency in interpreting statutes, regulations, and case law, and providing practical guidance to non-legal stakeholders.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with county officials, staff, and community partners.
• High level of professional ethics, sound judgment, and commitment to public service and equitable treatment of all community members.
• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the Utah State Bar (or ability to obtain licensure within a specified timeframe).

Responsibilities

• Manage criminal and juvenile calendar, including felony and SVU cases.
• Draft and review ordinances, contracts, and policies; prepare and present legal opinions.
• Represent the county in hearings, trials, and administrative proceedings.
• Supervise or mentor other legal staff and coordinate with law enforcement.
• Conduct legal research and review evidence; negotiate resolutions where appropriate.
• Participate in training or community education related to county laws and procedures.
