Job summary

WGL is seeking a Senior Associate Legal Counsel to support a broad portfolio of commercial transactions, infrastructure projects, real estate, and emerging initiatives in the energy sector. You’ll serve as a trusted advisor to cross-functional teams, drafting and negotiating agreements and providing practical, business-focused guidance to balance risk and objectives.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor and 5+ years of experience in commercial, infrastructure, real estate, energy, or related legal practice.
• Active membership in good standing with at least one state bar and the ability to practice in DC, Maryland, or Virginia.
• Strong commercial contracting and legal advisory experience, ideally within energy, utilities, infrastructure, or similarly complex industries.
• Sound judgment and the ability to manage matters independently while knowing when to escalate risk.
• A collaborative mindset and the ability to build relationships across diverse business functions.
• Intellectual curiosity, adaptability, and willingness to jump into new challenges across a broad range of topics.

Responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate a wide variety of commercial agreements supporting utility operations, engineering, construction, procurement, and strategic initiatives.
• Provide practical, business-focused legal advice that balances risk management with operational objectives.
• Support infrastructure and growth projects through legal guidance on commercial, real estate, and land use matters.
• Partner with stakeholders across engineering, construction, procurement, real estate, compliance, and regulatory teams.
• Contribute to emerging areas of the business, including infrastructure modernization, renewable natural gas initiatives, and large customer developments.
• Share knowledge, improve processes, and help strengthen the capabilities of the legal team.
