Job summary

WGL seeks a Senior Associate Legal Counsel to support a diverse portfolio of legal matters across commercial transactions and infrastructure projects. The role focuses on drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, providing business-focused legal advice, and partnering with engineering, real estate, and regulatory teams to advance projects and initiatives.

The position requires a JD and 5+ years in relevant practice, with bar admission to DC/MD/VA.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor and 5+ years of experience in commercial, infrastructure, real estate, energy, or related legal practice.
• Active membership in good standing with at least one state bar and the ability to practice in DC, Maryland, or Virginia.
• Strong commercial contracting and legal advisory experience in energy, utilities, infrastructure, or related industries.
• Sound judgment and practical problem-solving with ability to manage matters independently while knowing when to elevate risk.
• Collaborative mindset and ability to build relationships across diverse business functions.
• Intellectual curiosity, adaptability, and willingness to develop expertise across a broad range of topics.

Responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate a wide variety of commercial agreements supporting utility operations, engineering, construction, procurement, and strategic initiatives.
• Provide practical, business-focused legal advice balancing risk with operational objectives.
• Support infrastructure and growth projects with guidance on commercial, real estate, and land use matters.
• Partner with stakeholders across engineering, construction, procurement, real estate, compliance, and regulatory teams.
• Contribute to emerging areas including infrastructure modernization, renewable natural gas initiatives, and large customer developments.
• Share knowledge, improve processes, and strengthen the legal team.
