Job summary

State of South Carolina seeks a Security Supervisor to plan, coordinate and direct security staff and oversee inmate custody in a medium/maximum security facility. You will supervise security for buildings and public property and ensure OSHA standards are met.

Eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training on hire is required, with a strong emphasis on inmate counts, investigations and dispute resolution within a correctional environment.

Qualifications

• State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
• SCDC minimum: 3 years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one year of supervisory experience.
• Degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience year-for-year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry into the position.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody, and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility of security for all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmate counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
