Job summary

West Virginia is seeking a Correctional Officer Captain to oversee shift/unit supervision within a correctional facility. You will ensure safety, enforce rules, and manage staffing, training, and performance evaluations. The role includes directing audits, investigations, and reporting to leadership.

You will lead a team of security personnel, coordinate coverage, and participate in disciplinary actions and promotions as needed, while maintaining compliance with agency policy and state law.

Qualifications

• Six years of full‑time or equivalent experience as a correctional officer or related criminal justice field.
• Substitution: college coursework may substitute for experience at 1 year per 30 hours of study.
• Completion of required training and supervisor courses.
• Background checks and physical and medical assessments are required.

Responsibilities

• Plan, direct, and review the work of subordinates within a correctional facility.
• Provide for safety and security of staff, inmates, and the public; enforce rules and policy.
• Oversee overtime, attendance records, and performance evaluations; conduct audits and inspections.
• Lead hiring, promotion decisions, and investigations; prepare facility operation reports.
