Job summary

City of Suffolk is looking for a Construction Inspector to ensure local development projects comply with planning policies and city standards. You will inspect materials, methods, and locations, and test construction materials to verify compliance.

The role involves preparing reports and assisting the CIP Manager with project administration, requiring initiative, tact, and clear communication with property owners, developers, contractors, and the public.

Qualifications

• 8 years progressive experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; or an Associate's degree with 6 years of journey level experience; or a Bachelor's degree with 4 years journey level experience.
• Must possess valid driver’s license.
• Must have VDEQ Erosion and Sediment Control and Stormwater Inspector Certification; VDOT Pavement Marking Certification and Traffic Signal Inspector Levels preferred.

Responsibilities

• Inspect construction projects to enforce City ordinances and standards for new construction, alterations, and repairs.
• Review project plans and documents; coordinate with contractors, property owners, developers, and engineers.
• Prepare monthly estimates for capital projects and maintain records of status and testing results.
• Conduct required testing of water and sewer systems; oversee decontamination and sampling.
